We are announcing Cyclone, the world's first large-scale, on-demand cloud computing service specifically dedicated to technical applications. Cyclone is immediately available and enables two service models: Software as a Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).
The SaaS model offers customers pre-defined, pre-packaged, pre-certified technical applications that run in the SGI cloud across a variety of technical domains. The IaaS model enables customers to bring their own applications and data, and rent time in the SGI cloud.
Using either model, customers can now access, over the Internet, SGI’s fastest computers, interconnects, networking and storage systems hosted at SGI, optimized and managed by SGI, with access to SGI experts. Cyclone is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Cyclone supports a number of leading applications partners and five technical domains, including computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, computational chemistry and materials, computational biology and ontologies. Supported applications include: OpenFOAM, NUMECA, Acusolve, LS-Dyna, Gaussian, Gamess, NAMD, Gromacs, LAMMPS, BLAST, FASTA, HMMER, ClustalW and OntoStudio. SGI expects to add additional domains and applications partners over time.
Customers can now efficiently expand compute and storage capacity with no capital outlay. This eliminates lengthy procurement cycles and installation processes. Customers can provision infrastructure as they see fit, focus on their results and not the complexity of IT, and exit when the service is no longer required for their businesses.
Customers are looking to move freely among traditional data centers, modular data centers, and cloud services based on their specific strategies, budgets, applications and timetables. SGI is the only company “completing this need” and offering customers a spectrum of choice.
