Powerful vibrations!
Based on specific customer requests, this new subwoofer stands out from the crowd due to the very high mechanical excursion of the moving assembly which is at least one and a half times greater than the other 18" woofers in the FaitalPRO catalog.
The 18XL1800 was created to reproduce very low frequencies, down to the limit of the natural audible lows (20 to 30Hz) with an intense acoustic performance.
A high winding voice coil, an innovative magnet assembly, very large spiders(over 230mm), a wider cone edge are all distinguishing factors from its "younger brother" 18XL1600 and the "ceramic" 18HW1070.
The results are impressive, in fact, this new super woofer manages to perfectly recreate frequencies close to infrasound.
With a rated power of 1600 W and declared 3200 W maximum (according to AES standard), it maintains a good operating reserve that allows for best performance even in extreme conditions.
It boasts 95 dB sensitivity and is equipped with two demodulation rings which are dedicated to the reduction of the harmonic distortion and for the modulation of the inductance in respect to the excursion of the voice coil.
Excellent symmetry, strong suspension complianace even with large signals result in a very peculiar conformation of BxL curve denoting an incredible ability to maintain the functional stability of the moving parts over a very extended excursion.
The "motor" BxL has an almost constant value from -15mm to + 15mm excursion, and gradually decreases in a very controlled manner: this indicates a very high linearity even in case of considerable excursion.
Entirely designed using FEA modeling techniques, the new 18XL1800 implements a new waterproof cone made up of cellulose pulp mixed with a high quality synthetic fiber, a very large thermoformed and treated border, and a very efficient cooling system capable of a considerable reduction of air turbulence noise, all of which evolved from the designs applied over the years on other circuits already available on the catalog.
To achieve high levels of sound pressure at very low frequencies a loudspeaker must be capable to "move a lot" and in fact the 18XL1800 has sufficient headroom available to give it uncommon abilities in the lo frequencies.
The new geometry of the magnet assembly is another reason for pride in this new design: instead of employing a large neodymium ring, FaitalPRO design department preferred to choose a sectors' structure.
The adoption of such tiles has allowed a substantial reduction in the overall weight of the magnetic assembly, compared to what is achievable with neodymium slugs in a crown layout. The magnetic efficiency achievable with a ring magnet (even when divided into sectors) may be increased by up to 20% based on an equivalent magnet structure of the same weight made with the Nodymium slugs.
Flavio Naggi (Pro Audio Division Manager of Faital) said: "Although the new 18XL1800 has an average efficiency of 95 dB and is not exactly suitable for pure horn applications (to emphasize the acoustic efficiency) because of the Efficiency Bandwidth Product parameter of only 69Hz, its Thiele & Small parameters set suggests use in standard reflex speakers with large cross-section tuning ports or, even better, in double or folded transmission lines like Transflex or Tapped Horn.
It moves a lot of air already in single configuration, in double configuration they can generate vibrations of absolute deep bass.
Very large sound pressures and great power handling make it suitable for various indoor applications such as cinemas, theaters, concert halls, sports facilities, churches, as well as applications from typical high-end sound reinforcement systems and touring.
Not to put limits on creativity, the 18XL1800 could also be used in a sealed box of appropriate internal volume, providing an emphasis on the audio signal for the first two thirds octave of sound spectrum, to achieve an "Infra-Sub" suitable for high-end home cinema systems.
We also recommend it to complement the low frequencies section of a line array for playback of extremely low frequencies up to 28-26 Hz, and maybe joined to another more traditional sub that works down to 40 Hz complementing the low frequencies with full efficiency.
