DBW e Betamedia: FlexIP van, OB-van14

The first Italian OB Vehicle IP based is born from the cooperation of DBW and Betamedia.

Stefano Rebechi DBW CEO tells us: "Its name is FlexIPvan OB-Van 14 and it is born after a year of studying and discussion over it and following an innovative architecture."

"It is based on the great expertise derived from international experience, it contains highly integrated technologies, 6 working rooms with exclusive access doors, 26 Full Operative desk positions."

One of the main points is the so called "Fexi-Van" idea which includes the most advanced technological potential.
The infrastructure IP based allows production of video images up to 36 HD cameras and 4K SDR and UHD shooting with 24 cameras.
The heart is a SAM matrix coupled with a Kahuna video mixer capable of multi standard and multi resolution video managing, with contemporary HD, Ultra HD output.
Besides working with typical tv production configuration, this vehicle is perfectly capable of generating images with a more attractive studio look due to operating with cinema style cameras and Prime lenses.
Using a static address and fibre optic connections, this vehicle can overcome the limits of a typical on board martix and the production team may send to the remote venue only the resources which are really useful.
Stefano Rebechi continues: "DBW has heavily invested in the 4K native format in Italy - and in HDR (High Dynamic Range) - and now we own a huge number of Sony F55 and 4300 cameras and 4K Canon lenses. Investments were also made on slow motion, adopting EVS 4K and Sony 4K Servers which, coupled with Kahuna 9600 switcher, mean the possibility of real 4K native tv production and not upscaled which is common practice, but considered as not proper 4K."The agreement between DBW and Betamedia comes after an year of intense on field cooperation mainly on sports events. DBW brought experience from Stereo 3D, 4K,HDR, and VR 360, while Betamedia has a huge experience in ob vehicles and a good fleet. Betamedia has brought in this adventure their great experience in the IP world and integration of the latest technologies.
This OB Van14 represents also the fusion of tv and cinema technologies, that is cameras with super 35 sensors and others with 2/3" closely intersecting.
This also means offering the market two different possibilities within a single tv workflow.
In a sports broadcast for instance typical broadcast cameras can be used for their smaller sensors an wider depth of field and merge the more cinema images due to the F55.
Stefano Rebecchi declares: "Our partnership will produce more and more 4K in HDR and also in HD HDR, especially abroad where cinema look shootings are particularly appreciated on the tv screen. Here we use 4K cameras with super 35 sensors and Prime lenses, just like a studio shooting."

Rosario Messina tech. resp. of Betamedia is the father of this project which resembles the idea of the small bricks play which can be assembled and reassembled several times to create different shapes. So the productive content provider may send to the location, to each location, a vehicle equipped exactly and only with the needed apparatuses, leaving the unnecessary ones to be used in other venues."
"The Flexi-Van original patented style (in the US) allows to connect groups of equipments with a single multicore cable, in order to gain a great flexibility of the several different modules of the production system."
"This fosters the possibility of dynamically reconfiguring any production system according to the real needs and even cooperating with third parties abroad: for instance in a foreign venue, so to move on the spot only the portions of equipments needed and eventually making use of partners' equipments on site."
"The idea beneath is optimizing resources and several modules, each accomplishing a proper task, can be associated and quickly air shipped to any location of the world.
Any vehicle can be quickly reconfigured according to needs and no equipment is stuck anywhere, just like budgets."
"Making use of a proper network of associates a potential multi national tv producers could easily cover each event tv production needs moving only and exactly the powerful resources needed."
"The newest FlexIPvan is just an extension of the original idea and the only difference is that all configurations and functionalities are developed and managed in the IP world so even extending the flexibility and the facility of engaging only the battle-horses needed."

The system is based on the Extreme router and and the new generation of
switches, based on 40/100 Gb ports and 400 Gb ring Buses, will allow from 6 to 9 Tb of non-blocking bandwidth.
Special on purpose engineered cable connections by Link are already used in Flexivans (3G, 12G), while new optical MPO-MTP connectors are being developed to support the IP standard on FlexIPvan.
The adoption of this recent development, in the IP domain, allows even more savings and the modules base architecture becomes more and more profitable. The IP, mainly based on SAM equipments, becomes central in the production environment and an "ubiquitous" matrix is managed by an on purpose software to quickly change any needed reconfiguration.
The IP world allows to move the matrix in close proximity to each set, to change configurations on the fly, to implement IP infrastructures in the typical broadcast world, to visibly increase productivity and efficiency while decreasing the dimensions and costs of the equipments.
On top of that, the recent IP implementation allows a better management of the whole tv production compound.
The Kahuna video mixer is central in this landscape for its ability to mix different resolutions an formats and manages Ultra HD with or without HDR, besides HD, obviously. The different outputs supply the different standards needed contemporarily according to broadcasters needs (clean, host, personalized, etc).
Sam was also chosen for the IP matrix which has the same features of the typical broadcast ones but in the IP realm.
This leverages the several advantages of the IP infrastructure, by now in the consolidated 2022-6 and 2022-7 standards, though sometimes TR03, probably to be officialized next year.
Though not universally accepted at the moment since many still think a hybrid IP and SDI is still to prefer in the video production, the complete IP technology allows several advantages as per flexibility and remote production in an easier way. Whereas a proper connection is provided, the production centre can be easily connected to the shooting venue through IP connections. And all this is becoming more and more convenient.
The FlexIPvan 14 is a 13.60 mt and 14.70 mt with extensions, 2.55 mt and 5.50 mt with extensions width.
It can handle up to 36 Cameras HD-3G or 4K/UHD HDR – HFR – WCG (SONY HDC-4300 or PMW-F55).
