Stefano Benzi and the Giro d'Italia

Eurosport, the home of cycling

Stefano Benzi, director of Eurosport since 2008, is in the structure since 1998.
His past describes his experience in television, before Eurosport in Italy and previously with SKY, before with Tele +, and in previous years for Antenna3.
We met him in particular to seize his comments on Giro d'Italia and to describe this among the greatest moments of Italian sports from the eyes of Eurosport.
Stefano tells us: "Here I clothe two respects, as Director and Head of the editorial team, while for the productive organization I am the director of the whole platform for what concerns the television contents. We manage the contents in Italian, the commentators, cut out the international assets according to the characteristics of the local audience that follows us on the Italian market.

We start from the basis of the programming offered by Eurosport that is configured in a more pan-European style."
His is the choice of which av service to involve or whether to use internal structures. He has been involved since the beginning of the technology startup for the Italian subsidiary.
Benzi goes on: "Until 2008, Eurosport productions was outsourced; the mother company still operating from its headquarters in Paris paid an outside company to carry out the "TV product" of the two channels Eurosport 1 and 2.
While since 2008 the headquarters decided to create an Italian structure with a good margin of independence and thus the journalistic and technological structures, organization of production, were born.
Here in Corso Sempione, Milan, are no shooting studios since the most of the work consists in a customization of the international feed from Paris, although sometimes this activity is also very thrust, for example in the promos with all promotional line for certain programs, such as the Under-17 European Championship.
Most of the product arrives Live, prepackaged, from Paris; then here an Italian comment is applied and we also create some parts of the program itself as in the case of the Giro d'Italia."
Benzi points out: "The Giro d'Italia this year is an entirely produced by RAI event. But those who choose to follow it on Eurosport love our commentators Salvo Aiello and Riccardo Magrini.
Eurosport so decided to invest heavily on the Giro d'Italia, in fact for the first time two television crews are committed in Italy for personalization and one of them is Italian.
In this edition, the official feed is added by tailored images thanks to a crew positioned at the departure and another at the arrival.
After the start of the race the troupe moves and reaches the arrival to prepare the material for the next day.
Then they move to the start of the next day for a continuous chain of production.
Eurosport places an ob-van to cover all the steps, in fact the two troupes create images not just for the Giro d'Italia but also for the general news bulletins, for insights and tv magazines. An editing line is also available.
Each crew is complete with operator, boom, an assistant camera and journalist and later (a total of about 10 people).
The mobile unit is owned by Eurosport, the graphics are the official feed by RAI. Over seventy hours live are created.
And then the replicas have also a great success.
This year we planned also a "Highlight fest" of an hour on the air from 20 to about 21H; it's a summary of every stage and is commented from scratch.
The best of the day is completed by interviews, and this is another new feature of this edition.
The official feed personalized by Eurosport is derived from the clean feed broadcast from RAI, based on nine motorcycle cameras (five, plus two audio-only and 2 more for radio RAI); 15 Sony HD cameras are shooting at the arrival, a Super Motion and an UltraMoltion are engaged as well.
A plane is the radio link in a circular orbit above the "hot" area, two helicopters shot with gyroscopic devices. Another helicopter acts as a radio link backup.
